'Canada ~ Instructions for Taking a Debit and Credit Card Transactions Using the Ingenico IPO EMV Device on Open Edge '

Canadian Credit and Debit card transactions are different than they are in the U. S.  In the U. S., the same card can be used as either a Credit transaction or as a Debit transaction.  A Debit card can be inserted into a chip device and the PIN transaction can be bypassed for use as a Credit transaction.  This is typically the users ATM card.  In Canada, there are ONLY Debit cards and ONLY Credit cards.  Therefore, the instructions for using the EMV chip reader in Canada are a bit different for processing in Shape.

I.  Debit Transactions

  • A debit transaction is one that requires entering a 4 digit PIN.  On the Point of Sale screen, select 'Debit Card' as you payment type.

II.  Credit Transactions

  • A Credit Transaction does not require a PIN number.  On the Point of Sale screen, select 'Credit Card - Swiped' as the payment type.  **Note ~ ignore the nomenclature.  If there is a chip on the card, please insert the chip.  If there is no chip, you will swipe the card.

III.  When to take a Debit Card or Credit Card transaction using the EMV device.

For the most part, your credit card account numbers will be stored in Shape and you will take these transactions through the batching process.  However for 1 time POS transactions, making the first payment on a new membership, or PIF purchases where the member will not be storing their card, you will need to use the device.
